The purpose of this article is to walk users through the steps of enabling clipboard history within Windows 11.
What is "Clipboard History"?
The Clipboard History feature allows or disables your PC's ability to "keep record" of what you copy/paste with CTRL + C and other copy/paste methods. This is primarily helpful when you are copying and pasting long strings of data daily and sometimes need to remember or quickly paste something you copied a while back.
Clipboard History Q&A
Q: Can other users see my Clipboard History?
A: NO, other users cannot see your history. Its specifically saved to YOUR profile locally on your PC and not accessible anywhere else. So unless you leave your PC unlocked, no one else should have access to this.
Q: Does the Clipboard History save indefinitely?
A: NO, the history will clear each time you log out, reboot or restart unless you pin a copied item which is NOT recommended. Each new session begins a new local record and IT has set up this feature so you cant sync to other PC's intentionally or accidentally, so its typically seen as quite safe, but general security awareness is still required and encouraged.
Q: Is it safe to Copy/Paste PII while Clip Board History is active?
A:
NO, while the history is saved locally and cleared each time you lock your PC, reboot, etc. (unless an item is pinned) its still
not recommended to copy PII or Critical information. If you work frequently with PII or Critical Information, this tool is not recommended. If you must copy with the tool enabled, you may always
clear your clipboard history afterwards to remain secure.
